Differences between digital signage displays and consumer TVs

The main difference between the two is that a TV has more built-in capabilities than a digital sign. Think of a digital sign like a computer monitor. The TV can be programmed to perform certain functions as well as display your content. In contrast, a digital sign requires modification or additional equipment to have the same feature set as a television.

However, the need for additional hardware and software also means that digital signage has a much wider range of features than a TV. You can't beat a TV when it comes to streaming video and similar high-definition digital entertainment, but digital signage can be interactive in a way TVs can't.

Companies tend to choose to take on the associated costs of programming and installing digital signage instead of TVs to take advantage of their flexible nature and ease of switching content when they need a change. There is specialized TV modification software, but it can be difficult and expensive to find.

That being said, if the purpose of your display is to broadcast your company's ads, news, music videos, or other video content with sound, TVs may be the right choice for your business. They also have a much lower initial cost. Below we look at the pros and cons of digital signage and TVs.

Design

The first major difference you'll notice between commercial digital signage displays and a consumer display is the design. Aesthetically, commercial displays are designed to blend in with their surroundings - think clean, industrial, minimalist design. Consumer displays are usually more aesthetically pleasing and come with a TV stand.

Durability

The designs also differ when you consider durability. Consumer screens are not designed to wear out during long continuous use and are easily damaged if dropped or hit by an object. Commercial displays, however, are specifically designed for 24/7 operation and come with housings that protect against shock, dust, heat, and other adverse conditions. If you need an outdoor digital signage display, a commercial display is pretty much the only option.

Brightness

Consumer displays tend to perform best in low light as they are designed for living spaces. However, most industry environments—such as retail stores, hospitals, malls, and airports—are very well lit, meaning that consumer display brightness levels may not be high enough to be seen clearly. To get an idea of the huge difference in brightness between the two, just know that the maximum brightness level of consumer screens is typically 350cd/m2, while commercial digital signage displays can reach over 2500cd/m2.

Content

To wrap up the design comparison, it's important to note that consumer screens are inherently designed to display cable TV, movies, and video games. In addition, commercial displays are designed to broadcast and stream all types of content, including web pages, social media channels, online videos, motion graphics, slides, promotional content, and more. This is in addition to everything a consumer display can do.

24/7 use

Unlike consumer TVs, which are meant to be used intermittently, commercial Digital Signage displays are designed to run continuously without any issues thanks to their powerful on-board cooling systems. Consumer displays are designed to operate no more than 6-8 hours per day. So if you're looking for a display to play content continuously for a long period of time, a commercial screen is the way to go.

Portrait mode

At the same time, consumer screens are not meant to be used as vertical digital signage displays due to their limited cooling systems. They are likely to overheat and quickly suffer. Commercial TV displays, however, support portrait mode without issue.

Life span

There's a reason why commercial displays are more expensive than their consumer counterparts. They are built with higher quality components that last significantly longer than consumer TV components. You can expect 70,000 to 100,000 hours of continuous commercial display use.

Warranty and Support

Typically, commercial digital signage displays come with a three-year warranty, while most consumer TVs only have a one-year warranty. Also, consumer screens sometimes say in small print something like that the warranty will be voided if the display is used commercially.

Support

Most warranties for commercial displays include after sales support. This is a huge help for businesses that are having problems during the installation phase. In addition, warranties for commercial displays usually cover on-site service if repairs are required. Consumer TVs typically only cover minor repairs, which is a big problem if you have to lug a 60-plus-inch screen.
